Islanders News · Islanders honor Seniors AJ Fraser, Kenny Thomas, Mikey Thomas and Kam Smiley, defeat Phoenix 66-35

St Johns celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday February 7, 2018 for the four seniors on this year’s Varsity Boys Basketball team. They are AJ Fraser, Kenny Thomas, Mikey Thomas, and Kam Smiley. AJ Fraser was letterman in basketball his Senior year and has been instrumental off the bench providing a spark with his toughness on the boards and his passing ability. He goes all out on defense and has been a solid player all year long. Kenny Thomas is a two year letterman on Varsity after spending two years playing JV ball. He has become a top scorer for the Islanders with his floater becoming a staple in our offense. Kenny is also a consistent rebounder and protects the rim by blocking shots. Mikey Thomas is a four year letterman on Varsity, playing there since 9th grade. He is the toughest rebounder and takes pride in blocking out the opponents from getting rebounds. He has developed his jump shot over the years and can hit the three when needed and is tough to handle down low with the ball. Mikey has been a team leader for the Islanders and will surely be missed. Kam Smiley is a four year letterman on Varsity, playing since the 9th grade also. He has been a great ball handler over his career playing point guard and shooting guard. Kam has hit some big shots for the Islanders throughout his career her and is tough as nails on the boards for his size. Kam will surely be missed as a team leader and 4 year player as they do not grow on trees.

Senior night was a successful evening as the boys and their parents were honored before the game on the court. All four Seniors started along with Junior Tyrus Richardson on Senior night. They were given a momento to remember their time as an Islander. The Islanders then took the court to face the Palmetto Scholars who were playing for their playoff lives. The Islanders and Phoenix went back and forth in the first half with the pesky Phoenix fighting back to trail 28-22 at the half. The Islanders took control in the third quarter by outscoring them 19-4 to lead 47-26. The Islanders finished strong in the 4th quarter and closed the game by winning 66-35. Five Islanders finished in double figures in scoring, with Tyrus Richardson scoring 14, Mikey Thomas 13, Kenny Thomas 12, Devin Roby 12(with 4-5 on 3 pointers), and Patrick Washington with 10.

Islanders finish 9-3 in the region and in third place, which is a 3 game improvement over last years’ 6-6 region record and fourth place finish. The Islanders also move to 12-11 overall with their fifth victory in a row. The Islanders will start the playoffs on the road on Tuesday night against the third place team from region 6. As of now that has not been determined but it will be against someone from the Hemingway area region.
