Islanders News · Islanders sweep Navigators as both Boys and Girls win

The Lady Islanders ripped the Lady Navigators 49-12 to get the season sweep versus Lowcountry Leadership and position themselves for the playoffs next week. First things first though, as this week we battle the Riptide on the road Monday night at 6 PM at Charleston Math and Science. Then Wednesday night, we’re back home for Senior night versus Palmetto Scholars also at 6 PM. Sole Stanley, Asha Bangura, Zuriah Zepke,  and Twanasia Heyward will be playing their last game at home as an Islander and will be honored during the game.

In the Boys game:::::     What a finish in this Region 4 game as the Islanders defeat the Navigators 43-42! With 3.6 seconds left, and the score tied at 42, the Navigators had two shots at the free throw line to take the lead. After missing the first free throw, Coach Hammack called time out to set up a last play for the Islanders. The Navigators missed the free throw and the Islanders got the rebound and the ball was passed to Tyrus Richardson who was fouled with .1 seconds left. Despite pleas from the crowd that he was fouled while shooting a three pointer, Tyrus was awarded a 1 and 1 bonus free throw. He calmly sank his free throw to give the Islanders the lead then missed the second on purpose to end the game and seal the 43-42 victory in a wild one.

Lowcountry Leadership came into the game in first place in the region at 8-1 after receiving their first region loss Wednesday vs Baptist Hill(9-2). The third place Islanders (7-3), battled all night long in a close game from start to finish and closed out their best victory of the season so far. The win solidifies the Islanders in third in the region at the moment and sets up a Monday night show down Downtown versus 4th place Charleston Math and Science (6-4). With the win over Lowcountry, the Islanders get some revenge for last month’s 57-32 loss in Hollywood, and knock the Navigators out of first place for the first time all year.

The Islanders were led by their defense holding the Gators to 15 points less than their last meeting. As a team, the Islanders had 7 blocks, 3 steals and 31 rebounds, while limiting turnovers to 7. The 7 turn overs were a season low and show that if we don’t give the ball to the other team, we can be competitive with anyone. The Islanders will hopefully build on this and keep taking care of the basketball on the way to close out the year.
