Multiple Teams · Islanders varsity Boys and Girls win at Military Magnet in entertaining games, JV lose by 10

On Monday night the mighty Islanders traveled to Military Magnet Academy for their first road region games of the young season. The JV opened the night with a 10 point loss to the JV boys from MMA. Cold shooting was too much to overcome but the boys battled all night keeping it close.

In the second game of the night, the varsity Girls held off a ferocious charge by the Lady Eagles to win 50-45. The Islanders jumped out to a 27-16 half time lead by having good spacing on the court and consistently scoring while playing inspired defense. The Lady Eagles have two low post players with soft hands and good shooting touch. They have a few quick guards who handle the ball fairly well and push it up the court. The lady Islanders were up to the challenge of defending and clearing rebounds.  The Lady Eagles used a 12-6 third quarter to cut the Islander lead to 33-28, setting up a back and forth 4th quarter. Between the two teams there were 34 points scored in the 4th quarter. Sole Stanley hit some big shots down the stretch as did Twanasia Heyward. Ms Heyward always seemed to be in the right place, grabbing several offensive rebounds and putting them back in the basket. Emoni Mack hit some big shots and Kynaja Fludd secured a lot of rebounds as well as playing tough defense in the paint. Nya Givens hit 4 of 5 free throws and drew several fouls on great drives to the basket. The Lady Islanders had less turn overs than other games and seem to be improving in taking care of the basketball. They will have all Christmas break to practice and improve before their next game in January against Math and Science.

In the evening’s finale, the varsity boys had another entertaining game as Miltary Magnet controlled the first half. The Islanders had a ton of turn overs in the first half that the Eagles took advantage of stretching their lead to 28-12 at the half. The Islanders came out tough in the second half and put in a gritty performance against a hungry team. Tyrus Richardson and KJ Robinson willed themselves to the free throw line drawing fouls against the Eagles post players. Tyrus shot 18 free throws making 7, while KJ made 4 of 8. The Eagles best post player fouled out mid way through the 4th when Mikey Thomas drew a foul on him at the top of the key. The Islanders doubled up the Eagles in the third quarter 16-8 and closed the quarter trailing 36-28, within striking distance. In the 4th quarter the Islanders continued their defensive pressure turning the Eagles over and chipping into their lead. With a little over a minute to go in the game, the Islanders took their first lead. They led 47-44 and held on as the Eagles shot three unsuccessful three pointers until the Islanders finally cleared the rebound. Tyrus hit 1 of 2 free throws for the final margin, and the Eagles desperation three came up short. The Islanders improved to 2-1 in the region with the 48-44 win.
