Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · Islanders fall on Valentine’s night in Greeleyville

The Islanders entered Tuesday’s Valentine’s night first round playoff game on an upswing in play and with a chip on their shoulder after losing a controversial game Friday night. Due to the result Friday, the Islanders were forced to travel an hour and half away to Greeleyville to face CE Murray. The crowd was arriving more than an hour before the scheduled 7 PM tip-off and there was defintely a buzz in this small South Carolina town and it had nothing to do with Cupid.

St John’s started out slow as they struggled to deal with the War Eagles’ height and depth. Murray took a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and there crowd settled in. There was much of the same in the second quarter as Murray extended their lead to 42-25 at the half.

The Islanders got tough to start the second half and showed the War Eagles that they belonged in the playoffs by ripping off a 10-0 run to start the second half. With the score now Murray 42-35, the War Eagles coach called a timeout to settle down his team. The tactic seemed to work as they outscored the Islanders 10-5 in the rest of the quarter to take a 52-40 lead into the final quarter. The fouls were starting to add up for the Islanders especially with their post players defending the depth of the Murray post players. The referees were consistently calling every foul even hand checks that weren’t called much in the regular season so fouls added up quickly for both teams.

In the 4th quarter, the Islanders were only able to pull it back to within 5 at their closest and as the game went on the crowd got more raucous especially on a particular dunk. Michael Thomas fouled out with 5:30 to go with Kenny Thomas fouling out a couple of minutes later. The Islanders would battle to the end but come up short falling to the War Eagles 69-59. CE Murray moves on to face #1 seed Hemingway on Friday night.

BJ Darby led the Islanders with 14 points in his final game on 6-11 shooting. Sophomore Tyrus Richardson added 13 points on 5-11 shooting. TJ Givens had 9 points in his final game as an Islander on 4-6 shooting and had 7 rebounds to tie for the team lead with Michael Thomas. Larynz Givens finished his Islander career with 6 points gutting out a 1-10 shooting performance but knocking down 3 out of 4 from the free throw line. JJ Mitchell, Marcus Dawson, and DeAntre Robinson also finished their last game as Islanders. We will all miss these 6 seniors as the basketball season always ends so quickly and painfully as you don’t know it’s over until those last seconds tick off. They worked and toiled many hours in the gym working on their individual games as well as their team game. We thank you guys for all of your sacrifices and wish you young men the best as you advance to college and beyond. We hope you look back and remember your time at St John’s as special times.
