Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · Islander Boys Gain Season Sweep vs Phoenix

The Islanders came into Wednesday night’s contest against PSA needing a win to keep pace with 3rd place Chas Math and Science. Coming into the night, CM+S was 6-5 in the region and a half a game ahead of the Islanders at 5-5. The Islander boys went out and took care of business against an improving and sharp shooting PSA squad 79-59 to improve to 6-5. The Islanders led throughout in an entertaining game that saw a bunch of made 3 pointers on both sides.

The Islanders led 19-15 after one quarter with both teams feeling each other out defensively. The Islanders had a big 2nd quarter and outscored the Phoenix 22-12 to take a 41-27 lead in to the half. The Phoenix struggled somewhat with the Islanders press in quarter number 2 leading to a lot of steals and fast break points. St Johns outscored PSA 17-16 in the 3rd quarter and led by 15 heading to the 4th. The final period had lots of points by both teams with St Johns outscoring PSA 21-16 despite #11’s buzzer beater from almost half court on Senior night.

Tyrus Richardson led the scoring for St Johns with 14 points and he added 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Kenny Thomas again hit double digits with 13 points as did Kameron Smiley with 11, and JJ Mitchell with 10. TJ Givens had a balanced game with 7 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.

St John’s plays Lowcountry Leadership on Friday night in Hollywood at 5139 A Gibson Rd Hollywood SC 29449 at 730 PM. The Islanders have the chance to improvo 7-5 in the region with the win and pull into a tie with Charleston Math and Science. St Johns owns the tiebreaker against them having beat them by 10 earlier this week and lost to them by 2 last month. Lowcountry Leadership will not lay down as they have been more competitive as the season has worn on judging by their 63-49 loss last night at Chas Math and Science. If the Islanders are able to pull it out, they will be rewarded with a home playoff game next Tuesday. If not, they will travel on Tuesday night. Everyone come out and support the girls and boys varsity basketball teams as they look to end the regular season on a high note.
