Girls Junior Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Lady Islanders snap two game losing streak with dominate 2nd half

The Lady Islanders came into this midweek non conference game against Oceanside Academy having lost two tough conference games in a row. The Islanders entered the contest at 4-10 and the Landsharks entered the game at 1-4(with some missing scores on their schedule). The first half was pretty tight as the Islanders held a 21-16 lead at the half.

In the second half the Islanders defense toughened up as they denied the Landsharks at every opportunity shutting them out in the 3rd quarter 14-0. The Islanders continued the pressure defense throughout the 2nd half creating 15 steals in the 2nd half alone. This led to some fast break opportunities that the Islanders turned into easy points by outscoring the Landsharks 25-5 in the 2nd half.

As has been the case all season, both young and older players contributed to the win. Nya Givens had 4 second half steals, Bernardica Brown snagged 3 second half rebounds and Juliette White also chipped in 3 second half rebounds to lead the freshman class. Sole’ Stanley(Junior) was unstoppable with her dribble drives around the Oceanside defense. Sole’ also hit two big second half three pointers as well as a couple of twos claiming 11 second half points. Senior Tyleah Legare used her ball handling skills to create some open shots for her teammates as well as scoring 4 second half points on 2-2 shooting to go with a steal. Jahleah Boatwright(Junior) had a steal and two blocks in the second half to fuel the Islander defense.

Coach Michael Hogan has to be pleased with the effort on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the game at Live Oaks that was scheduled for Friday night has been canceled as the Live Oaks girls team lost too many players to continue the season. The Lady Islanders will next play Tuesday night(1-31) at Military Magnet at 6:30 PM. The Islanders will have another road game next Friday night(2-3) at 6:30 PM at Lowcountry Leadership in Hollywood. Come out next week and make these short trips to root on the Islanders as they look to finish stroong in conference play.
